I am a student of health and wellness, and early in my studies, I knew there must be something other than the traditional drastic methods of "getting healthy" I was coming across, but I didn't yet know what I was looking for. Personally, I had a lot of knowledge swirling around my brain, but I needed some help slowing down and figuring out how to implement changes in my life in a way I could transform my life without completely overhauling. Annie, Jen, and Lauren's program and their coaching allowed me to do just that.

Balance 365 helped me come to terms with slow, sustainable change. I didn't feel pressured to do things I couldn't sustain, but I got the encouragement I needed to change the things I knew would benefit me long term. I got over my all or nothing mentality with Balance 365. I left behind the idea that I could or should live a "perfect" day. I was wanting to sign up for this group for a while, but waited until the Sunday afternoon before it started to register. I didn't know if I wanted to spend the money on myself and I didn't know what I'd get out of the group. But I thought...well, let's just see.

 
If I'm counting correctly, I have had at least 7 major 'a-ha' moments here. Big realizations. Things I needed to realize about myself so that I could work towards getting healthier- mentally and physically. I owe this to every woman in the group. The coaches have created this wonderful space for us to be ourselves and have guided us through. Some of us overlap strengths and some of us overlap weaknesses, but you never feel alone here. You can't help but feel you are being hugged by a bunch of new girlfriends. I have learned soo much from all of you!

Also, I can honestly say in the beginning I was waiting for something magical to happen in regards to my weight loss. I was waiting for something to 'click' and then Voila - the weight would disappear and the muscles would be visible. Haha. I knew this was unrealistic, but still I was holding out hope. What I can say though, is the thing that clicked was that ultimately it is 'me' who has to do it. Nobody can do it for me. I realize now that the knowledge, habits, unconditional support of this group and the ability to reach out for help when I needed it was what I was lacking before. I needed your help to work through my barriers.

I've come a long way to be able to say- I get out of it, what I put into it. 'It' being both the habits and my very own self. And, I think it is kind of empowering to do so. I want a great life. So I am going to create it.

Dropping the baby weight was the first thing on my mind at six weeks post c-section with my second child (just 20 months after my last c-section). Not only was this the first thing on my mind, it came before everything else, including having enough milk to feed my tiny baby. I was used to excessive exercise and calorie restriction and I figured this was the best and fastest way to get skinny. Because skinny is healthy; skinny will make me happy.

I didn’t join Healthy Habits Happy Moms because I wanted to. Instead, I won my spot in the group through a contest. And because I didn’t have anything at stake, I entered with the mindset that I didn’t really need this. I’m not overweight. I have it all together. Why did I need to change?

Now, I don’t want to be one of those people saying, “this is so amazing and changed my life; everyone needs to try this!” But it did. And here’s what happened:  I spent the first month in denial. Like I said, I had all this stuff down. I was skinny. I worked out.

No. I was sick.

The coaches noticed my “bad” habits pretty quickly and suggested I see someone professionally to work on my disordered eating and excessive exercise. They also held me accountable to make this happen. I started talking to a professional. And thankfully, that day was the beginning of my real involvement in the group and myself.
I still see the specialist weekly. But, most of all I started to take the program seriously. The program is about creating healthy habits in your life. And these habits are meant to stick—stick FOREVER. Some habits were easier for me than others. A few habits I fought, but those were the ones that have stuck with me the most. The ones I brushed off as “easy” because “I already do that”, have been the ones I have to work the hardest to maintain. 

Today I often wake up thinking about the habits that I need to follow. This has not been easy for me. It brought about HUGE life changes. That also doesn’t mean I don’t have setbacks. I do. But I have the tools, the resources, and the support to get back on track. I am much closer to accepting my body, as is, flaws and all. And I’m making my way closer to the happiness I deserve in life thanks to some great women with some pretty big ideas.

The biggest thing I've noticed so far is how hyper aware I now am of just how much BS is out there. I didn't realize how bombarded I was with what society thinks is ideal or what I should be doing to "improve myself". No wonder I felt so crappy. I think that awareness of this is step one in combatting it and developing healthy habits that will, in fact, improve my life (whether or not that means my waist line shrinks is complete irrelevant). I've been turned completely around by this program. I'm still new, and still learning, but it is like the weight of society's expectations has lifted off of me. Even though I'm not there yet, learning that its OK to accept my body as it is has completely changed how I live and see myself. It has left me feeling lost (who am I if I don't hate myself?!), but its breaking down the cycle of self loathing, which leaves space to form the new habits and thoughts B365 encourages. I'm learning to stop nasty thoughts about myself in their tracks, and to interact with myself and the world in a way that's thoughtful, supportive, and accepting. Because of this, I have hope for my children. The thought of my daughters looking at their post partum bodies with the disgust you describe?...definitely crying. A huge part for me has been the change in my mindset, I have way less anxiety, Less beating myself up, the more self love and self care. I am happier , I handle situations better.. I have become more confident and less worried about what others think... I have made better boundaries in my life in order to take care of myself better. It's all a work in progress but I finally feel like I have found a program that is moving me in the right direction and I can do things I love to do.

This program is, in a word, freedom. Only being a couple of months in, I do have moments when I still feel disgusted with my body and doubt whether or not these habits will be enough to reach any kind of transformation. But those are just moments. The majority of the time I feel confident in making progress slowly and surely and I mostly feel like I'm accomplishing something instead of feeling set up to fail. The toughest part really is to stay the course and trust, but it sure beats the alternative which was to tear myself down and resign myself to never hoping to be happy in my own skin.

1. Hope - hope that my health goals can be achieved with moderation and habits. Hope that my healthiest period a couple years ago is not a fluke. I can rebuild good habits block by block and not do some crazy overhaul.

2. Relief - relief to find like minded people, to finally find a forum where nobody is pushing food woo and I am not pressured to defend my diet soda, or butter, or ANYTHING. 

3. Awareness - awareness of all the little (and big) things that are influencing food obsession and self image from flippin birth. I've become much more aware of how my husband and I talk, and how I want to model health, food, and self image to my daughter. It makes me a better parent.
